80’s Birthday Cake

My talented wife has been making these really spectacular fondant based cakes for a little while now, and today she crafted this one for a friend’s 30th birthday.  The party is going to be 80’s themed, so the cake is as well.  It came out totally rad.  I crafted the Stay Puft Marshmallow man myself, because I’m a big 80’s movie nerd.  Rachel, you rock!

What is the stay-puff marshmellow man made out of?

@Mary: Fondant, pretty much like a sugar dough.

I would love to know how your wife made the splatter paint design. Making an 80’s themed cake for my husband’s 40th and he wants that design.

She just took icing, watered down to get the consistency she wanted, mixed with food coloring and did some test splatters on cardboard to make sure it didn’t run. Then she put up a sheet behind the cake and just dipped brushes in the icings and flung them making splatters. It was probably the most nerve wracking part for her, because a bad splatter would pretty much ruin the cake.
